Field Hockey Puts Up Strong Defensive Fight but Falls to No. 7 Louisville
October 16, 2022 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Ball State field hockey team (7-7) ended its two-game weekend in the state of Kentucky suffering a 4-0 loss to No. 7 Louisville (12-3) in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Junior Hannah Johnston, who has been a strong force for the Cardinals this season at the goalkeeper position, held her own against UofL after recording 10 saves while facing 21 shots and nine corners. Johnston now has 74 saves on the season and ranks second in the Mid-American Conference in saves per game (7.50).
Ball State was able to generate defensive pressure throughout the contest, however, Louisville would end up scoring a goal late in the second period.
The deficit remained just a single goal up until the 52:41 mark in the final period of play but Louisville was able to add two key insurance goals with back-to-back scores to make it 3-0.
UofL struck a goal one more time late in the fourth to give the game its final score of 4-0.
Offensively, Ball State struggled with only one shot on goal which came from freshman Fleur Knopert.
The Ball State field hockey team returns to Mid-American Conference action on Friday, Oct. 21 at Appalachian State. The game is slated to begin at 6 pm ET and currently Ball State sits in second play in the conference standings at 4-1.
