Four Score In Double Figures In WBB’s Loss At Akron
January 15, 2022 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - The Ball State women's basketball team suffered an 83-76 setback in Mid-American Conference action Saturday afternoon in James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Cardinals (9-6, 2-3 MAC) had played their third game this week and second-straight on the road against the Zips (7-4, 4-1 MAC).
It was an up-and-down affair for the first 20 minutes of action that consisted of nine ties and 11 lead changes. Ball State and Akron's seesaw match lasted all the way until the half as both teams were knotted 40-40 at intermission.
After the break, Ball State rattled off back-to-back baskets from junior Sydney Freeman and senior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir to give the Cardinals a slight 44-40 edge over the Zips.
Unfortunately, Ball State's lead didn't last long as Akron went on a 29-13 scoring spree that would end the third quarter of action in favor of the Zips 69-57.
In the Cardinals last efforts to win the ball game late in the fourth quarter, Ball State started to let it fly from behind the arc. Freshman Ally Becki and Freeman each registered 3-pointers to bring BSU back to within six (80-74) with 1:10 remaining.
Becki would then hit a layup with 35 seconds left to make it only a five-point deficit (81-76) for Ball State. After that, the Cardinals were forced to send the Zips to the line.
Although Akron did go 2-of-4 from the charity stripe to end the game, the Zips' 12-point lead at the end of the third quarter was too much for Ball State to overcome in the final frame.
For the second-straight contest, graduate student Chyna Latimer led the Cardinals in scoring with 17 points, while Becki wasn't far behind, turning in a 16-point performance, just one shy of her career best. Becki also registered her first double-double with a personal-best 10 rebounds. Agustsdottir chipped in 12 points and Freeman rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10.
The Cardinals have consistently been successful from behind the arc this season, but today the Zips won the battle from behind the arc, 12-8. Ball State did win the points in the paint category over Akron, 38-30.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home Wednesday when it hosts Toledo at 6:30 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena.
