Women’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker In Final Minutes to Toledo
January 19, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker falling by a score of 58-55 in the final minutes to Toledo Wednesday night in Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals (9-7, 2-4 MAC) displayed a well-rounded performance tonight on both sides of the ball, but in the end the undefeated Rockets (13-3, 7-0 MAC) remained atop of the MAC standings with an unblemished league ledger.
For the game, the Cardinals were led by Chyna Latimer, for the third-straight contest, who had a career high 18-point performance. Senior Thelma Dis Augustsdottir and junior Sydney Freeman each added 10 points.

To say the Cardinals started tonight's game on a mission would be an understatement. Ball State outscored Toledo 21-6 in the opening 10 minutes of action. Three Cardinals had scored five points by the end of the first period, freshman Ally Becki, Freeman and Latimer.
Offense was not the only component to the Cardinals success in frame one, it was also rebounding and their defense. Ball State closed out the quarter out-rebounding Toledo 16-7 while defensively holding the Rockets leading scorer Quinesha Lockett scoreless.
Toledo got hot in the second quarter taking a page out of Ball State's first quarter handbook and outscored the Cardinals 14-7. Ball State still held a 28-20 advantage over Toledo at intermission.
Despite the Cardinals strong first half of play, this game was far from over after the break. Just like seasons past when these two teams collide, the result usually ends in an all-out war until the very end. With 4:42 left in the third quarter the Rockets had gone up by one 36-35 over the Cardinals. Agustsdottir quickly drained a 3-pointer sparking a 10-4 run that allowed Ball State to take a 45-40 edge over Toledo as both teams headed into the final 10 minutes of action.
Although Becki opened the fourth stanza with a 3-pointer, the Rockets continued to chop at the heels of the Cardinals.
Toledo turned up its defense causing Ball State some fuss that in turn led to some Cardinal miscues. Just under the five-minute mark Ball State and Toledo were knotted at 52-52.
After that, it was a seesaw match in which unfortunately Ball State finished on the wrong side of the win column.
The Ball State women's basketball team returns home again on Saturday, when it hosts Central Michigan at 1 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals game day sponsor against the Chippewas is Meijer.
