Volleyball Answers with Saturday Sweep at Kent State
September 25, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
KENT, Ohio - - The Ball State women's volleyball team made sure history did not repeat itself Saturday afternoon, ending the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play with a dominating 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-10) sweep of Kent State at the M.A.C. Center.
One day after failing to convert four match points, including three in what could have been another three-set sweep but turned into a five-set loss, the Cardinals (11-3; 1-1 MAC) never took their foot off the gas against the Golden Flashes (6-8; 1-1 MAC).
Led by a Ball State career-high 19 kills and a .600 (19-1-30) attack percentage from graduate transfer outside Jaclyn Bulmahn, the Cardinals turned in their second-best overall match of the season by hitting .365 (45-7-104) as a team.
Graduate transfer outside Emily Hollowell was just as impressive, blasting 12 kills and hitting .500 (12-1-22) in the win.
Freshman setter Megan Wielonski continued to make her mark, dishing out 30 assists to go along with a team-high 11 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. She also served up a match-high four aces, helping the Cardinals finish the night with an 8-to-4 edge in the category.
On the defensive side, sophomore middle Lauren Gilliland was credited with a match-high five total blocks to help limit the Kent State attack to a .113 (27-16-97) rate of success. Junior libero Natalie Risi would also junior Wielonski in double figures with 10 digs.
Savannah Matthews once again led the Kent State attack with 10 kills, but the BSU defense was also able to force her into eight errors which was two more than she had in last night's five-set, 27-kill performance. Meanwhile, KSU libero Erin Gardner led all players with 12 digs.
The Balls State women's volleyball team returns home next week, when it hosts Ohio in a pair of 6:30 p.m. matches Thursday and Friday night at Worthen Arena.
