MUNCIE, Ind. - - For the second straight match, the Ball State women's volleyball program set its Worthen Arena attendance record with 2,310 fans watching the Cardinals (4-7) battle 11th-ranked Purdue Friday evening.
"I am really grateful to play in this environment with so many members of the community here," head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "It was a really special day. As a team, we had some spurts where we were really scoring well, especially our middles. There were certainly some things Purdue was doing on the offensive front that we could not find an answer for, but we will learn from that. Overall, I thought we had great composure, especially playing in front of a crowd like this."
Thursday's afternoon tilt versus Cincinnati saw a then-record 2,117 fans, topping the previous record of 1,744 set versus Tennessee State on Sept. 3, 2010.
Ball State held its own against the national powerhouse coached by alums Dave Shonell, playing to 13-15 in each frame, including a knotted score of 15-15 in the second. Unfortunately, the Boilermakers (8-1) surged down the stretch in each set to claim a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-19) victory.
Leading the charge once again for the Cardinals was sophomore outside Carson Tyler who blasted a team-high 12 kills for her 11th match of the season in double figures this season. She also collected four digs and was a perfect 23-for-23 in serve receive, as neither squad tallied a service ace on the night.
Back on the front line, Ball State's middle duo of juniors Camryn Wise and Gwen Crull tied for second on the squad with eight kills apiece. Both also netted a block.
The Cardinals' backcourt was led by 11 digs from sophomore libero Sophie Ledbetter and 10 from graduate outside Noelle VanOort. Junior setter Lindsey Green dished out 29 total assists, helping Ball State hit .195 (38-16-113)
The Purdue offense was fueled by 25 kills from Kenna Wollard, while also hit .435 (25-5-46) for the night. As a team, the Boilermakers connected for a .372 (53-11-113) rate of success guided by 43 assists from Taylor Anderson. Grace Heaney led all players with 13 digs.
The Ball State women's volleyball team closes non-conference play Saturday afternoon when it hosts Eastern Kentucky for Tailgate Day. Games will be set up in the green area outside the main ticket office of Worthen Arena for fans to enjoy prior to the match which starts at 4 p.m.
