MUNCIE, Ind. - - It will be another big early season test for the Ball State soccer team on Sunday, when it travels to West Lafayette to take on its second straight in-state opponent in Purdue for a 1 p.m. match.
Â
The Cardinals (1-0-0) are coming off a strong showing in a season-opening win at Valparaiso (Aug. 22), in which it capitalized on a pair of penalty kick goals to pick up a 3-1 victory.
Â
Not only did Ball State convert on the pair of PKs, but the defense also picked up its play over the course of the game, limiting the Beacons to just four shots after a 19th-minute goal.
Â
It will take just as solid of a defensive effort to get past the Boilermakers Sunday, as the hosts enter the contest fresh off a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga on Thursday. In fact, Purdue enters the match with a 1-0-2 overall record which includes 1-1 ties versus Kentucky and at #18 Vanderbilt.
Â
Sunday's match will be the fifth overall meeting between the Cardinals and Boilermakers, with Purdue holding a 3-1 edge in the all-time series. The clubs last played in West Lafayette on Aug. 29, 2014, with the hosts earning a 2-0 win.
Â
All three of Purdue's wins in the series have come on it's own pitch, including a 6-1 victory in 2009 (Sept. 7) and a 2-0 triumph in 2002 (Oct. 27). Ball State's lone win in the series came Nov. 1, 2003 at the Briner Sports Complex by a score of 1-0.
Â
Fans not able to make it to West Lafayette for the match, which features FREE ADMISSION for Pooches at the Pitch Day, can follow the action in Sunday's showdown can do so via LIVE STATS and by watching the game on B1G+.
