MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State has racked up numerous academic honors from the United Soccer Coaches over the years. But no Cardinal had ever achieved the organization's highest individual academic honor. Until now.
Â
BSU juniors Tatiana Mason and Lexy Smith were named Scholar All-Americans for the 2020-21 season, making history for the Cardinals program. Both were third-team selections. They were also named to the North/Central Scholar All-Region Team.
Â
Mason owns a 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major. The All-MAC Second Team forward led Ball State with 10 total points on four goals and two assists in the shortened 10-game season. The former MAC Freshman of the Year boasts 36 total points for her career.
Â
Smith owns a 3.65 GPA as a sociology major. An All-MAC First Team defender, she started all 10 games at center back for a BSU team that surrendered only nine goals all season. Smith also ranked second among BSU players with three assists.
Â
The pair helped Ball State to the MAC West Division championship, a 6-3-1 overall record and a spot in the conference title game for the second time in three years.
