Women’s Tennis Continues To Dominate MAC Play With 6-1 Win At NIU
April 09, 2021 | Women's Tennis
ROCKFORD, Ill. - Friday afternoon was another successful day for the Ball State women's tennis team as the Cardinals won their 16th straight, while also remaining unblemished in Mid-American Conference play after turning in a dominating performance against Northern Illinois at the Boylan Tennis Center.
Northern Illinois fought really hard and played good tennis," Ball State head women's tennis coach Max Norris said. "Coach Burns always does a good job preparing his team to compete. I was proud of how we fought and executed in doubles indoors. Then I was proud of our focus and how we fought off momentum swings in singles."
The Cardinals (16-2, 7-0 MAC) took home a 6-1 decision over the Huskies (11-10, 3-3 MAC) after winning the doubles point and earning victories on five of the six singles courts.
The top two courts got the job done today for BSU in doubles play earning 6-3 wins over their respective opponents.
Amy Kaplan paired up with Emma Peeler to capture the doubles defeat over the Huskies No. 1 duo of Maria Potsi and Anastasia Rakita. The win improved the twosomes overall doubles record to 7-3 on the season.
It was the No. 2 doubles tandem of veterans Livia Lukacs and Victoria Sec that would put BSU on the board first with their victory over Fernanda Naves and Lara Slisko.
In singles action, it comes to no surprise that Silvia Martinez and Kaplan were the first matches off the court as Martinez only gave up two games (6-0, 6-2) to Iulliia Dmitrieva at the No. 6 slot and then Kaplan followed with an 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Huskies No. 5 singles player Naves to push BSU's advantage to 3-0.
Peeler would give the Cardinals their match point today with her 6-1, 7-6 (4) game-winner over NIU's top player Potsi.
Ball State also won on courts three and four today, respectively with Mariya Polishchuk beating her opponent in straight sets (7-6 (3), 6-1) and then Rebecca Herrington finished the match off with a three-set thriller (6-0, 6-7, 6-2).
The Ball State women's tennis team continues its two-match road swing when it travels to Bowling Green on Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET first serve. The Cardinals won their first meeting over the Falcons 4-3 on March 26 in Muncie.
