Field Hockey Falls Short In Hard Fought Defensive Battle At Kent State
April 09, 2021 | Field Hockey
KENT, Ohio -Friday's meeting against the Golden Flashes mimicked the year prior and unfortunately ended up with the same result, as the Cardinals fell by just one goal shy this afternoon, losing a hard-fought defensive battle to the Golden Flashes at Murphy-Mellis Field.
Â
With the loss, Ball State falls to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in Mid-American Conference action, while Kent State improves to 6-3 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
Â
The biggest difference between these two squads today were penalty corners. Kent State earned nine while Ball State only had one.Â
Â
That would be how the Golden Flashes would score the lone goal of the contest which occurred at the 34:44 mark of the third period after Kent State's Clara Seto Rodriguez found the back of the net four her fourth score of the season.
Â
Ball State continues to show progress but just struggled to find the back of net despite five attempts, including one shot on goal.Â
Â
The Cardinals were led offensively by sophomore Kerrianne McClay as she fired off two shots including one on goal.
Â
Defensively, sophomore goalie Wietske Overdijkink remains a force to be reckoned with as one of the top goalies in the league she registered three saves on the day. For her career, Overdijkink just needs six more saves (94) until she reaches the 100 plateaus.
Â
The Ball State field hockey team continues its two-game MAC road series against the Golden Flashes on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m. ET at Murphy-Mellis Field.

"Kudos to Kent State as they executed a strong game plan," Ball State field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We had our moments today but couldn't quite capitalize at goal. It's exciting to see the passion and energy our team has and how that is translating to momentum on the field. Their growth has been tremendous and today was another day that showed it. We can't wait to get back out there tomorrow."
Both teams held one another scoreless throughout the entire first 30 minutes of action and were comparable statistically for the game.Â
