MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team begins a four-game Mid-American Conference road swing this weekend with games on Friday and Saturday at Kent State. Both games will be played at Murphy-Mellis Field at 1 p.m. ET.
Â
For the first time since the 2016 season, the Ball State field hockey team is on a three-game winning streak after turning in two impressive wins last weekend at the Briner Sports Complex against Bellarmine. The Cardinals opened the weekend with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Knights on April 2 and then defeated Bellarmine the very next day, 3-1.
Â
Since the arrival of third-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal, the Cardinals have consistently improved and are driving towards the goal of rebuilding a historic program that has been very successful in years past in the Mid-American Conference.Â
Â
Bernthal has a wealth of experience in the MAC not only as a coach but also a player as she makes her return to her alma mater Kent State this weekend. Bernthal was a four-year starter for the Golden Flashes. As a senior, she helped Kent State to a top-20 national ranking, MAC regular season and tournament championships and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.Â
Â
This weekend is an important weekend for both teams with only six game remaining in league action both Ball State (5-5, 3-3 MAC) and Kent State (5-3, 3-3 MAC) are neck and neck in the current MAC standings both tied at second.
Â
The Golden Flashes were on a five-game win streak prior to last weekend's series at Miami. Kent State fell to the RedHawks on Friday (0-3) and then Saturday (2-4).Â
Â
The last time these two teams met it turned out to be a defensive battle in Muncie, Ind. on Oct. 4, 2019. The game came down to one goal and unfortunately that went to Kent State.Â
