Â
The MAC West Division championship and a spot in the MAC Championship game are on the line Sunday when Ball State hosts Eastern Michigan in the regular season finale.
Â
This sprint of a season has come down to this. The formula is simple. A Ball State win sends the Cardinals to the title game. Any other result and Eastern Michigan goes.
Â
Ball State (5-2-1) led the division for several weeks before falling from that perch last weekend with a 2-0 loss at Western Michigan. The Cardinals bounced back with a 1-0 victory at Northern Illinois on Melissa Diceman's late goal and can reclaim the top spot against EMU.
Â
The Eagles (6-2-0) have moved to the top with a three-game winning streak. Their last loss came to Ball State in Ypsilanti when second-half goals from Nicky Potts and Mac Henson helped the Cardinals overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit.
Â
Eastern Michigan has not played since last Sunday, its midweek game at Toledo called off for a COVID issue with the Rockets program just like Ball State's matchup at Toledo was the week before.
Â
Sabrina McNeill leads Eastern Michigan with six goals on the season and scored the EMU goal in the first meeting between these teams this season. The Eagles have scored 16 goals on the year, while Ball State has allowed only six.
Â
Diceman and Tatiana Mason lead the Cardinals offensively with three goals each, while Potts -- a 2019 All-MAC First Team midfielder -- owns a goal and four assists.
Â
BSU won the West Division each of the last three years the conference used a divisional format in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The league went back to divisions for this COVID-shortened season.
Â
The West Division winner will square off with East Division winner in a MAC Championship game on Saturday, April 17.
