March 07, 2021 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - - Eight different players tallied an RBI, while three pitchers combined to help guide the Ball State softball team to an 8-3 victory over Alcorn State Sunday to close play in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by No. 18 Southern Mississippi.
Â
After falling behind 2-0 thanks to a two-run second by the Lady Braves (2-9), the Cardinals (4-5) responded with a three-run third and never looked back.
Â
Ball State's winning run came in the bottom of the fourth inning, courtesy of a sacrifice fly from senior designated player Gabby Magnifico. Senior right fielder Kendall Fields scored on the play after tallying a one-out double and stealing third.
Â
In the three-run third inning, junior second baseman Amaia Daniel, junior left fielder Faith Hensley and senior first baseman Janae Hogg each picked up RBIs. Daniel and Hogg's came courtesy of singles, while Hensley's team-leading 12 RBI of the season was on a grounder to short.
Â
After pulling ahead in the fourth, the Cardinals added two more runs in the fifth making the score 6-2. This time, an RBI fielder's choice from redshirt sophomore catcher Jazmyne Armendariz and an RBI single from freshman right fielder Brooke Ligacki plated BSU's runs.
Â
While Alcorn State pushed across its third run in the top of the sixth, the Cardinals responded with two more in the bottom of the inning to give the game it's final score.
Â
This time, the runs came on an RBI groundout from freshman center fielder Hannah Dukeman and a double from senior pinch hitter Stacy Payton who is second on the team with seven RBI this season.Â
Â
In the circle, senior Alyssa Rothwell was credited with the win after her 2.2 innings of work in which she held Alcorn State hitless and struck out four. Sophomore Deborah Jones pitched the first 1.1 innings, while Tieghan Morio threw the last three. All three of Alcorn State's runs were unearned.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Tuesday, when it visits Jacksonville State for a 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT first pitch.
