Softball Picks Up Tuesday Win at Jacksonville State
March 09, 2021 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - - Senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn got the offense going with a two-run home run, the defense jumped in with a couple double plays and sophomore Deborah Jones ended the game with a strikeout.
Â
The result, a 4-2 victory for the Ball State softball team in a Tuesday night showdown at Jacksonville State's University Field.
Â
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 5-5 on the year and 3-3 on their current spring break trip. The next stop, three days a UAB Blazer Classic starting Thursday with a 6 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. CT showdown with the host Blazers.
Â
In tonight's win over the Gamecocks (3-9), the Cardinals pounded out six hits, starting with a leadoff single from freshman shortstop Kayla Lissy. It was one of her two hits, with the other being a triple of the fence in right field in BSU's three-run second inning.
Â
While the Cardinals could not capitalize in the first, stranding a pair of runners, the same happened for JSU which loaded the bases with one out before Ball State junior starter Tieghan Morio induced a foul out to third and a force play at second to end the inning.
Â
The Cardinals were able to capitalize on a leadoff single from senior catcher Stacy Payton in the second, however, as K. Wynn's two-out, two-run blast gave the Cardinals an early edge. Lissy nearly made it back-to-back bombs with her triple off the fence.Â
Â
She was still able to score, however, as after a walk to junior second baseman Amaia Daniel, the pair successfully pulled off a double steal with Lissy swiping home for what proved to be the game-winning run.
Â
The Gamecocks looked to get right back into the game with a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, but a double play on the next batter, sparked by Lissy at short, helped keep JSU off the board.
Â
The hosts would start the bottom of the third with a double, and cut into the Ball State lead by a run thanks to a one-out RBI single. However, with runners at first and second, BSU's second double play in as many innings limited the damage to a single run.
Â
After stranding a pair of Cardinals in the top of the fourth, JSU added a second run in the bottom of the inning, trimming the lead to 3-2.
Â
That was all Ball State's pitchers would allow, however, while a two-out sixth-inning RBI single from senior left fielder Haley Dominique gave the Cardinals an insurance run. Sophomore pinch hitter Haley Wynn scored on the play after doubling to open the inning.
Â
Senior pitcher Darcie Huber picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-2 on the year. She threw 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run, while striking out three. Morio pitched the first 2.1 innings, surrendering just five hits and one earned run.Â
Â
Jones closed the game, picking up her second save of the season by striking out two of the five batters she faced, including the final batter of the contest.
