
Ongay's Two Wins Leads Men’s S&D at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio - - While junior Hunter Ongay turned in a solid performance to sweep the diving events, the Ball State men's swimming & diving program suffered its first dual loss of the season with a 219-73 setback at Miami Saturday afternoon.
Ongay, the reigning Mid-American Conference Men's Diver of the Week, picked up the Cardinals (4-1) lone two event wins against a tough RedHawks (4-0) squad at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. His first victory came with a score of 281.48 on the 1-meter board, while his second was courtesy of a 306.45 score on the 3-meter board.
Freshman Zach Zishka recorded Ball State's first of 10 top three time of the day, clocking in at 10:00.05 to place third in the 1000 freestyle.
Junior Ryan Short followed with an explosive effort in the 200 freestyle, giving Ball State its top finish in the pool with a second-place time of 1:43.93.
Sophomore Jared Holder added a third-place time of 52.03 in the 100 backstroke, while freshman Joey Garberick placed third in the 100 breaststroke at 56.90.
Three events later, Ongay gave Ball State its first event win of the day on the 1-meter diving board. Freshman Isaac Hunter was not far behind, placing second in the event with a score of 261.98.
After a third-place swim from freshman Sam Jennings in the 200 backstroke (2:00.09), the Cardinals divers would go on to place first and third on the 3-meter board. Ongay picked up the win, while Hunter took third at 247.28.
The Cardinals closed out the meet with senior Drew Weeks, senior Davis Meyn, Short and sophomore Patrick White placing third in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:26.41.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program will now turn its attention back to training, as it prepares for the 2021 MAC Swimming & Diving Championships which will be held back at the Nixon Aquatic Center April 8-10.
