NORFOLK, Virginia - Adam Tellier led the Ball State baseball team with a big day at the plate but host Old Dominion found hits at the right times to beat BSU 6-3 on Friday afternoon.Â
"We had our chances but couldn't get the big hit," head coach Rich Maloney said.
Tellier, getting the start at DH in the leadoff slot, went 4-for-5 with and was a homer short of the cycle. He scored two of BSU's three runs in what was the best individual offensive game for a Cardinal on the young season. Tellier led off the game with a single on the game's second pitch and later doubled to lead off the top of the 3rd inning. Moments later, he scored on a double by Noah Navarro.Â
With ODU leading 6-2, Tellier started the 9th with a triple in the right-center gap and then scored on a sac fly from Navarro.Â
ODU (9-3) scored one run each in four of the first five innings of the game. Two of those runs came with two outs. A late 2-run homer also came with two outs.
CARDINALS PITCHING: Starter Chayce McDermott and went 4.2 innings and did not walk a batter. Tyler Schweitzer got outs for the Cards in relief, working 3.2 innings with six strikeouts and allowing just two hits.Â
"Hats off to Adam Tellier and Tyler Schweitzer," Maloney said. "Both had solid games."
BIG BLAST: The pivotal moment came in the bottom of the 7th with Old Dominion leading 4-2. An 11-pitch at bat with two outs for ODU's Andy Garriola ended in a 2-run home run to put the home team ahead 6-2. Garriola, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, fouled off six pitches before connecting on the longball.Â
"Old Dominion's hitters did a great job fouling off pitches until they got a pitch they could hit hard. You have to tip your hat to them," Maloney said.
UP NEXT: Game 2 of the series is Saturday at 1 p.m. BSU will send John Baker to the hill against ODU starter Nick Pantos, who has allowed just one earned run over 16 innings this season. Fans can follow @ballstatebb on Twitter for updates, the live stats or watch on CUSA.TV for $6.95.
