Brown Becomes WBB’s All-Time Leading Rebounder In Win At NIU
February 24, 2021 | Women's Basketball
DEKALB, Ill. - So many good things happened tonight for the Cardinals, not only did senior forward Oshlynn Brown become the program's all-time leading rebounder, BSU also punched its ticket to Cleveland for the 2021 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Tonight's game was an up and down affair between the two schools with both teams having significant leads at some point during the 40-minute duration.
But it was the Cardinals (12-9, 10-7 MAC) that prevailed, taking home the 82-79 victory over the Huskies (11-9, 9-6 MAC) Wednesday night in the Convocation Center.
"Extremely proud of this group and the resolve they showed in this win tonight,"Ball State head coach Brady Sallee said. "Our group showed some major league toughness in this big win. It was awesome to see Osh break the all-time rebound record, especially in a winning effort."
Although tonight's contest was another close call for BSU with the game knotted late at 79 apiece with just a minute left. A missed layup by NIU's Shelby Koker gave Ball State the ball back with 31 seconds remaining.
As the clock was winding down, Brown did what she does best, powering through two defenders to get the layup and draw the foul. Brown completed the old fashioned 3-point play to give BSU the lead back for good.
NIU couldn't get a shot off as time expired which secured the Cardinals victory.
It came to no surprise that tonight's game would be a close contest.
When these two teams collide on Northern Illinois' home court, historically it is always a battle.
Tonight's game was no different as the tug of war consisted of 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Cardinals used a 23-14 run in the fourth frame of action to cut NIU's once 10-point (56-46) third quarter lead.
Ball State's largest cushion of the game came in the second quarter, BSU was up by nine (24-15) at the 5:55 mark. NIU made a late comeback to close out the first half but the Cardinals were up by one (41-40) at intermission.
Brown, who finished the night with 26 points and 12 rebounds, broke the program record at approximately the 3:06 mark of the opening quarter. She now has 1,038 rebounds for her career.
Sophomore guard Sydney Freeman finished the night with 20 points while teammate redshirt sophomore guard Anna Clephane registered 18 points and junior forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir wrapped up the double digit scoring with 14.
The Ball State women's basketball team will wrap up its regular season road portion of its schedule Saturday at Toledo with a Noon tip-off in Savage Arena.
