Freeman Scores Career High 28 Points In WBB's Win At Toledo
February 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Cardinals continue to be road warriors this season, winning their 11th away game Saturday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action at Toledo in Savage Arena.
It is always a battle when these two teams collide but today Ball State (13-9, 11-7 MAC) had yet another all around dominating performance against Toledo (10-12, 6-12 MAC), taking home the 88-77 victory.
The Cardinals' charge was led by sophomore guard Sydney Freeman who outscored all players today with a career high 28 points. Freeman knocked down six of BSU's 12 3-pointers today, she also got help from teammate junior forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir, as she registered six 3-pointers as well for an 18-point performance.
Redshirt sophomore guard Anna Clephane dropped in 13 points and junior guard Essence Booker made her return to the court scoring 10.
BSU went 12-of-24 (.500) from behind the arc today against the Rockets.
For a team that typically gets most of their points in the paint, head coach Brady Sallee said he had to make some adjustments to what Toledo was going to do defensively against the Cardinals this afternoon.
Sallee knew that the Rockets were going to concentrate on taking senior forward Oshlynn Brown out of the game, forcing BSU to shoot from the outside.
So that is what the Cardinals worked on this week and Sallee thought his team was very efficient from 3-point range today.
Agustsdottir opened the contest with a 3-point basket and that would set the tone of the ball game, as BSU outscored the Rockets 22-13 in the first 10 minutes of action.
Toledo would get their offense going in the second quarter to cut the Cardinals first frame lead to three (24-21) with 5:53 remaining in the first half.
But again, Agustsdottir came to the rescue knocking down yet another 3-point basket to put BSU back up by six (27-21).
The Rockets would remain within reach but soon after Agustsdottir's 3-pointer her partner in crime Freeman also made another 3-pointer, helping the Cardinals eventually take a 38-27 edge over the Rockets at intermission.
After the half, Toledo came to within three on a few more occasions, but Ball State's all-around team effort gave BSU a 15-point cushion early in the final frame of action and after that the rest was history.
The Ball State women's basketball team will close out its MAC regular season action at home this week as BSU hosts Central Michigan on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET and then Western Michigan on Saturday for senior day. That game will tipoff at 1 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena.
