Men’s Swimming & Diving Sweeps MAC Awards For A Third Time

MUNCIE, Ind. - - After a strong showing at the IUPUI House of Championship Invitational, the Ball State men's swimming and diving program has swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards for the third time this season.
Sophomore breaststroke specialist Joey Garberick earned this third MAC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor this season, and the fourth of his career, while senior diver Hunter Ongay earned his second MAC Diver of the Week award this season, and the third of his career.
The duo helped the Cardinals score 891.5 points for a fourth-place finish among seven teams at last week's three-day invitational.
Garberick logged a pair of top 10 finishes at the meet, starting Thursday with a 12th-place effort in the 50 freestyle, including turning in the fourth-fastest time in the MAC so far this season with a time of 20.65 in the prelims.
On Friday, Garberick placed sixth overall in the 100 breaststroke with the third-fastest time in the MAC so far this season at 55.50. He closed the meet Saturday with an eighth-place effort in the 200 breaststroke, including the seventh-fastest time in the MAC at 2:03.54 in the prelims.
Ongay turned in Ball State's best overall individual effort at the meet with a third-place score of 293.85 on the 3m board. In addition, his 1m score of 274.75 took fifth to tie for BSU's second-best individual effort.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program turns its attention back to training through the holiday break, returning to action Jan. 7 at Youngstown State.
