Men’s Swimming & Diving Takes Third at Indiana Intercollegiates

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's swimming & diving program opened the 2021-22 season with a strong showing, turning in 22 top 10 performances on its way to a third-place finish at the 10-team Indiana Intercollegiates hosted by Purdue Saturday afternoon.
Junior Owen Chaye registered a pair of individual top 10 efforts for Ball State, taking fifth in the 50 freestyle (21.14) and eighth in the 100 freestyle (48.26). Chaye also led off the third-place 200 freestyle relay which clocked in at 1:25.19.
Rounding out Ball State's top five individual performers was senior Duncan McLarty with a time of 48.04. McLarty also anchored the third-place 200 freestyle relay.
In the diving well, the Cardinals were led by senior Hunter Ongay who placed sixth on the 3m board (299.85) and seventh on the 1m board (289.25). In addition, sophomore Wyatt Blake earned career-best scores on both board, with 284.00 on 3m and 281.85 on 1m.
The Ball State men's swimming & diving program will host an Alumni Meet Friday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Lewellen Aquatic Center, before returning to action with a home meet versus Miami at 5 p.m. on Oct. 28.

"The guys were fired up today," head coach J. Agnew said. "These men just love to race and they don't care who is in the other lane. They won't back down to anyone."
Leading the way for the Cardinals in the pool at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center was sophomore breaststroke specialist Joey Garberick who placed second in both the 100 breaststroke (57.51) and the 100 IM (51.51). Garberick also swam the second leg for the fifth-place 200 medley relay (1:34.24), helping account for 66 of Ball State's 325.5 points on the day."Joey did a great job for us today," Agnew said. "He spent a good portion of the summer recovering from an injury, so his endurance is still coming back, but his speed was on point for the sprint events."

"Our recently elected diving captain, Wyatt Blake, had a great day with two personal best scores on the 1m and 3m boards today." Agnew said.
