Despite Strong Second Half, FH Loses 2-1 On Senior Day
October 15, 2021 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team had a strong second half against Bellarmine on Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex but unfortunately fell short of a goal against the Knights. BSU would lose the contest by a score of 2-1.
Â
Ball State (4-10, 2-3 MAC) was looking to get revenge after its previous loss in non- conference action to Bellarmine (2-11, 1-4 MAC), also resulting in a 2-1 decision in favor of the Knights on Aug. 29 in Louisville, Ky.
Â
Throughout the season the Cardinals have been a second half team and today proved to be the same for BSU.Â
Â
After falling behind 2-0 to the Knights in the first half, Ball State's Kerrianne McClay gave BSU new life at the 47:28 mark after scoring her second goal of the season and fifth of her career. McClay's score came off a penalty shot to put the Cardinals on the board with over 12 minutes remaining in the contest.Â
Â
After that, the Cardinals had six more shot attempts and came very close to tying the game on a few occasions but regrettably couldn't find the back of the cage again the remainder of the contest.
Â
Defensively, Ball State held Bellarmine scoreless after intermission and also to only one-shot attempt in the final stanza.
Â
Prior to today's game, the Cardinals paid tribute to their seniors Alex Conrad and Callie Rumbaugh.
Â
The Ball State field hockey team heads to Longwood University for a Mid-American Conference road game on Oct. 22. Ball State will also play a non-conference game on Oct. 24 at Virginia Commonwealth. Both contests are slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET.

Head Coach Stephanie Bernthal Senior Quotes:
Â
Alex Conrad
Â
Alex has selflessly served this program since her first day at Ball State. Her transformation from freshman year to senior year has been incredible. She has done nothing but work hard and challenge herself and her teammates daily. As a defender, she is both crafty and very wise: qualities we have always relied on from her. It's no surprise that the team honored Alex with the captain role this year – she has been a solid presence that continues to help guide us to victory and through the adversity as well. Thank you for all you have done for this program Alex!
Â
Callie Rumbaugh
Â
Callie has the quiet confidence and toughness that has become a hallmark of this program. She has poured her heart out every single day on and off the field for the team. She may not say much, but she leads this group by example in all that she does. She is one of the most selfless and consistent players I have ever coached and has held down our midfield for four years due to that steadiness. It's no surprise that the midfield has become a force to be reckoned with around her. She wants none of the credit and only to help others be their best. Thank you for bringing that to us every day as a captain, Callie!
