
Ball State runs strong race at Joe Piane Invitational

Cardinals place seventh out of 24 teams in Gold Race
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In a loaded field at the Joe Piane Invitational Friday afternoon, Ball State proved it can run with the best teams in the country. The Cardinals placed seventh out of 24 teams in the Gold Race at Burke Golf Course, finishing just eight points from the top five.
California Baptist captured the race title with 44 points, followed by Charlotte (132), Auburn (178), Akron (206), Eastern Kentucky (233), Clemson (240) and Ball State (241). The Cardinals finished ahead of Cincinnati (153), Ohio State (262) and Kennesaw State (271) to round out the top 10.
Elka Machan and Sarah Mahnensmith paced Ball State, crossing the finish line at 17:40 and 18:10, respectively. Machan earned an 11th-place finish, while Mahnensmith capped the race in 30th.
Only a few seconds off the pack, Carly Spletzer crossed the line at 18:22, good for 46th, while Kylee Mastin ended the race in 18:32, good for 55th. Juliana Stogsdill rounded out the scoring after finishing 100th at 18:59.
In the Open Race, Maddie Aul and Ashley Craycraft each ran their best races of the season. Aul finished in a season-low time of 19:34, while Craycraft ended with a season-best time of 21:05.
Ball State's next run is slated for Oct. 15 at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill.
