Ball State places 14th out of 37 teams Saturday afternoon
PEORIA, Ill. – In its first 6k run of the season, the Ball State cross country team ran a strong race at the Bradley Pink Classic Friday afternoon. The Cardinals placed 14th out of a 37-team field at the Newman Golf Course.
Ball State was paced by Elka Machan and Sarah Mahnensmith, who finished seventh and 36th, respectively. Machan clocked in at 21:06.7, while Mahnensmith finished at 21:47.9.
Kylee Mastin and Juliana Stogsdill were next among the Cardinal contingent, crossing the line 22:32.5 and 22:49.3, respectively.
In the White Race, Jessica Velez finished 14th and timed in at 23:19.2.
"It was my first 6k, so I was a bit nervous, but it was not all that different from the 5k," Velez said following the race. "I was pretty proud of my performance and the team's performance. We did very well for our first 6k and it will just get better from here."
Ball State was the highest-finishing team among Mid-American Conference foes, besting the likes of Central Michigan (17th) and Western Michigan (26th), among others. Nebraska won the team title.
"We pulled together as a team," Velez added. "We really focused on what we wanted to do as individuals and as a team, and tackled those goals well today."
