Men's Swimming Set For Sunday's Butler Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. – After opening the season with two home victories, Ball State men's swimming hopes to continue its success on the road Sunday, when it travels to the Butler Invitational at Fishers High School.

The Cardinals are set to compete against Xavier and Valparaiso with events starting at noon.

LAST YEAR AT THE BUTLER INVITE:
The Cardinals placed third of five teams at last season's Butler Invitational which was held Jan. 26, 2020, tallying 516.50 points. Xavier finished first overall with 745 points.

Overall, the Cardinals turned in eight top three efforts and 16 top five performances at the meet. BSU's best even was the 50 free, which saw Owen Chaye (21.27) place second, Jack Wolfred (21.53) take third and Duncan McLarty (21.60) finish fourth.

Also earning individual third-place finishes at the meet were Drew Weeks in the 200 free (1:45.33), Ben Andrew in the 100 back (58.70), McLarty in the 100 free (46.88) and Ryan Short in the 500 free (4:51.68)

MEN'S SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
The men's swimming program enters Sunday's meet with a 2-0 record after beating Eastern Illinois (151-109) and Bellarmine (165-96) both at home.Â

In the meet against Eastern Illinois (Nov. 6), the Cardinals claimed victories in seven of 12 individual events and also took first-place in the 200 medley relay. Freshman Joey Garberick started his collegiate career by winning the 100 breaststroke (56.53), 200 breaststroke (2:09.49), and 200 IM (1:58.97).

Garbrick's win in the 100 breaststroke was a Lewellen Aquatic Center record and landed him fifth in the Ball State record book in the event. Zach Zishka, Jack Wolfred, Davis Meyn, and Handshoe also picked up individual victories at the meet.Â

In their most recent meet versus Bellarmine (Jan. 16), the Cardinals won nine out of 14 events with Aiden Maurer, Garberick, and Chaye picking up two individual victories each, plus a combined win with Handshoe in the 200 medley relay.

Adding to the win total was Short, who picked up a victory in the 1000 freestyle and was also part of the first-place 400 free style relay. Â

BALL STATE WIN LEADER:
Garberick leads the Cardinals with five individual event victories so far this season, while Maurer and Chaye have two apiece. Five other swimmers have one event victory.
