July 15, 2020 | Baseball
While the 2019-20 year of competition may have been cut short by COVID-19, there were still plenty of accomplishments to celebrate in Ball State Athletics.
Â
Through much discussion, BallStateSports.com has identified the top storylines of the year. We will unveil each of them one-by-one in the coming days.
Â
The stories will be revealed in chronological order, starting with the fall season. We continue today with a look back at the rise of a pair of Ball State student-athletes who were picked in the NFL and MLB Drafts this spring.
Chase Sebby Named First Team Academic All-American
The day of June 11 was a pretty big day for Ball State baseball. Not only was pitcher Kyle Nicolas picked in the second round of the MLB Draft, the Cardinals also got the news that the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) had named senior catcher Chase Sebby a first team Academic All-American. Sebby, a graduate student who earned a degree from Ball State in 2019, was the sixth baseball player to earn that honor in Ball State history.
"Chase represents the best of collegiate athletics. He is a leader, an excellent player and an outstanding student," head coach Rich Maloney said. "Being recognized as an Academic All-American is a tremendous accomplishment only a select few achieve."
Sebby was the 2019 MAC Defensive Player of the Year and a second team all-conference pick that year as Ball State went 38-19 and 20-5 in conference play. He's an Academic All-MAC honoree and a two-time Academic All-District player, and has also won several team awards at BSU.Â
For his career, Sebby is a .271 hitter with 36 extra-base hits, 68 RBIs and a .401 on-base percentage. He's also one of the active leaders with 26Â sacrifices. In the classroom, he was a Dean's List student as an undergrad in actuarial science and has also earned a certificate in statistical modeling. He plans to finish his advanced degree this coming school year.
