Softball Sweeps Bethune-Cookman in Wednesday Doubleheader
March 04, 2020 | Softball
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - - The Ball State softball team tallied 20 runs, while giving up just one, in a doubleheader sweep of Bethune-Cookman Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park. The Cardinals (16-6) won the opening game 11-1 and the nightcap 9-0 (6).
Â
"I thought today was a great response after our last outing," head coach Megan Ciolli Bartlett said. "It was an excellent team effort. Defensively, we got standout performances on the mound and made some exceptional catches in the outfield. Offensively, we kept applying pressure from top to bottom in our lineup. Bethune-Cookman's pitching staff didn't get a break."
Â
After being held off the board in the opening two innings of the day's opener, Ball State was sparked by a leadoff home run by senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn in the top of the third. The Cardinals would end up scoring three runs in the inning, and also tally runs in each of the next four frames on the way to the 11-1 victory.
Â
Wynn added a second home run in the top of the fourth inning, as well as an RBI single in the seventh, to lead the squad with three hits and three RBI, while also scoring three runs. Overall, the Cardinals slugged 10 hits in the game, with senior left fielder Haley Dominique adding two.
Â
Senior Alyssa Rothwell picked up the pitching victory, improving to 7-3 on the season by limiting the Wildcats (3-20) to just three hits and one run over her 7.0 innings of work. She also struck out five.
Â
In the nightcap, junior first baseman Stacy Payton gave the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead, with a two-run home run in the top of the first. She would go on to add a two-run double in the fourth and an RBI double in the seventh to drive in five of Ball State's nine runs in the game. She finished the contest 4-for-4, adding a single in the third.
Â
Once again, the Cardinals smashed 10 hits in the victory, with Wynn adding two more to finish the day with five.
Â
Back in the circle, freshman Deborah Jones earned her first career complete game shutout, holding Bethune-Cookman to four hits over her 6.0 innings of work. She also struck out seven of the 25 batters she faced.
Â
Junior catcher Delanie Johnson also made some great defensive plays in the second, throwing out a pair of runners trying to steal, including a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to end the game.
Â
Overall, nine different Cardinals recorded at least one hit in the doubleheader, while 10 different Ball State players scored a run and nine tallied an RBI.
Â
The Ball State softball team returns to action Friday, when it opens play in the FIU Invitational with games versus Maryland (10:30 a.m.) and the host Panthers (3:30 p.m.).
