Softball Drops Pair of Close Contests Friday at Panther Invitational
March 06, 2020 | Softball
MIAMI, Fla. - - Freshman third baseman Haley Wynn went 3-for-3 in the opener, and drove in the first run in the nightcap, but the Ball State softball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Maryland and a 4-2 setback to host FIU to open play in the Panther Invitational Friday afternoon at Felsberg Field.
Â
In the opener, the Cardinals (16-8) fell behind early as the Terps (9-10) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ball State looked to counter with one out in the third, when redshirt freshman second baseman Jazmyne Armendariz singled down the right field line and H. Wynn followed with a bunt single. Unfortunately, a fielder's choice and strikeout ended the rally attempt.
Â
Maryland was then able to capitalize on a pair of BSU errors in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 3-0. H. Wynn would try to spark two-out rallies with doubles in both the fifth and seventh innings, but the Cardinals could not capitalize in either situation despite bringing the tying run to the plate in both.
Â
Freshman pitcher Deborah Jones suffered just her second loss of the season in the game, falling to 6-2, despite throwing 5.0 solid innings. She held the Terps to just five hits and three runs, two of which were earned, while striking out a pair. Sophomore Tieghan Morio threw the final two innings, allowing just two hits.
Â
Ball State broke onto the scoreboard first against the Panthers (6-8), thanks to a sac fly from H. Wynn in the top of the second inning. Senior left fielder Haley Dominique reached on an error to open the inning, while singles from senior center fielder Kennedy Wynn and Armendariz loaded the bases to set up the sac fly.
Â
Unfortunately, the hosts countered with a with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead by one.
Â
Ball State was able to even the score on an RBI double from junior first baseman Stacy Payton in the top of the fifth, which drove home sophomore shortstop Amaia Daniel who reached on an error one at bat earlier.
Â
Like the second inning, however, FIU countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to give the contest its eventual final score.
Â
Senior pitcher Alyssa Rothwell suffered the loss in the circle for the Cardinals, falling to 7-4 on the year despite limiting the Panthers to six hits and four runs, only two of which were earned, over her 6.0 innings. She also struck out three of the 26 batters she faced.
