Softball’s Winning Streak Snapped by Columbia

ORLANDO, Fla. - - Like all good things, the Ball State softball team saw its 11-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 10-1 (5) loss to Colombia to close play in the UCF Invitational.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals (14-6) finished the weekend with an impressive 4-1 record and have now turned in winning records in each of the last three pre-conference tournaments.
Ball State actually took the lead first at the UCF Softball Complex, as senior first baseman Janae Hogg opened the bottom of the second inning with her seventh home run of the season.
Unfortunately, the Lions (5-5) proved the old proverb correct as they scored 10 unanswered runs to earn their second victory on the first day of March.
SUNDAY NOTES:
- Hogg's home run in the second inning was the 36th of her career … The total ranks fourth in program history and is two shy of tying Taylor Rager (2011-14) and Amanda Montalto (2009-12) for second on Ball State's career charts … The program record for career home runs is 75 set by two-time NFCA All-American Jennifer Gilbert (2011-14).
- The Cardinals have connected for at least one home run in each of the last 11 games … Ball State's 26 home runs over the first 20 games are the most in the first 20 games in program history … The total also ranks as the 12th-most in a season in program history, and are seven shy of breaking into the top 10 … The program's single-season record is 70 set by the 2012 squad which amassed 20 over its first 20 games.
- Senior left fielder Haley Dominique has reached base safely in each of the last 18 games for the Cardinals, including being hit by a pitch for the first time this season on Sunday … Overall, she has reached base safely in 19 of BSU's 20 games this season … Her 17 runs scored lead the Cardinals, while her 23 hits are second on the squad.
