BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (2-3) suffered a tough 2-1 loss against Big Ten foe Indiana (2-2) Sunday afternoon at the IU Field Hockey Complex.

Redshirt junior Rachel Pereira was the first Cardinal to strike offensively after connecting with the back of the cage off of a penalty corner in the first stanza. Pereira had a little help scoring her first goal of the season, as teammates redshirt senior Michelle Shampton and junior Jenna McKune were both awarded an assist.
Â
Ball State's defense held the Hoosiers scoreless up until the closing minutes of the second quarter. IU knotted the game at 1-1 right before intermission. After the half, it didn't take Indiana long to score again and take a 2-1 advantage over Ball State after capitalizing off of a penalty corner.
Â
The Cardinals were giving 10 chances to score to off 10 penalty corners in the final 15 minutes of action. Ball State got off 11 shots in the fourth quarter but struggled offensively the remainder of the contest despite its opportunities.Â
Â
Offensively, the Cardinals had a season best 15 shots on the day which was led by Pereira's with eight. Junior Abby Ferenczy collected four shots while teammates freshman Angel Nkosi, junior Audrey Tabor and newcomer Lexi Kansky each had one.
Â

Â
The Ball State field hockey team continues non-conference action when it plays the University of Massachusetts Lowell for a neutral site game next Sunday in Evanston, Ill., on the campus of Northwestern. After that, the Cardinals will face Northwestern Monday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. ET.
