MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team returns to the road this weekend when it plays twice in Evanston, Illinois. The Cardinals will first face UMass Lowell on Sunday on the campus of Northwestern before squaring off with the 13th-ranked Wildcats on Monday night.
"I am really proud of the place our program is in—the competitive drive of the team has been excellent this fall," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "Every game has been a battle--the difference has been a couple of key moments in each match. The losses have provided great learning for us, and have continued to make this group more focused and hungry. We are looking forward to taking on excellent opponents this weekend in Evanston and showing the strides Ball State Field Hockey is making."
The last time the Cardinals played UMass Lowell was in 2017 at a neutral site in Oxford, Ohio. The game resulted in a 2-1 overtime loss for Ball State. Michelle Shampton, now a fifth-year senior, scored the only goal that game for the Cardinals. Grace Chavez, now a junior, was the BSU goalkeeper that day and made six saves against the River Hawks.Â
Ball State will close out its visit to Evanston on Monday night against Big Ten foe Northwestern. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus. The Wildcats are the third Big Ten opponent the Cardinals will have faced already this season and the second ranked team Ball State will have played. The Wildcats have won the last nine meetings over the Cardinals.
