By the Numbers: Cross Country at the IWU Twilight Classic
September 05, 2019 | Cross Country
Muncie, Ind. - - The Ball State cross country program will look to build upon its strong start to the 2019 season Friday, when it travels up I-69 for the IWU Twilight Classic.
Â
Below is a breakdown of what to expect Friday by the numbers:
10 - - A total of 10 teams are slated to compete in Friday's 5K race. Expected to join the Cardinals and host Wildcats are Anderson, Bethel, Grace, Huntington, Marian, Indiana Tech, Taylor and Tiffin.
Â
3 - - Three of this week's opponents are ranked in the top 25 in the USTFCCCA NAIA Women's Cross Country National Coaches' Poll. Taylor currently holds the No. 3 spot, race host Indiana Wesleyan is slotted at No. 6 and Bethel rolls in at No. 25.
Â
2 - - This will be the second consecutive season Ball State had competed in the IWU Twilight Classic. Last season, the Cardinals placed second among the 10-team field trailing only Taylor which finished third at the 2018 NAIA Cross Country National Championships.
Â
6 - - The Cardinals are sending six runners to Friday's meet; Maddie Aul, Hannah Cummings, Emma Cunningham, Grace Dean, Meghan Hedrick and Vivian Van Eck.
Â
19:00 - - Ball State's five scored runners all finished in under 19:00 at last Friday's Butler Twilight. The Cardinals have opened the year at Butler in each of the last six season, and this is the first time more than two runners have went below 19:00 in the race. In 2018, the Cardinals had one time below the mark, while two runners finished faster in 2017. Prior to that, no Ball State runner had finished in under 19:00 at the Northview Church Course in Carmel.
Â
72 - - The expected weather for tomorrow's run is 72 and partly cloudy, a welcome change of pace from last year's trip to IWU which saw less than ideal weather conditions including heavy rain early in the day and light rain throughout the race.
Action in the women's 5K race is set to begin a 6:15 p.m. at the Indiana Wesleyan University Cross Country Course in Marion which is considered to be one of the fastest courses in the state of Indiana. On Friday @BallStateTFXC got off to a great start, placing second in the Butler Twilight!
