Cardinals Drop MAC Opener to Central Michigan, 1-0
September 27, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite outshooting Central Michigan 13-5, the Ball State University soccer team dropped its Mid-American Conference opener by a score of 1-0 Friday evening at Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals fell to 6-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league play with the loss while Central Michigan improved to 4-0-2 and 1-0-0.
"We played well, but I think we have set a high enough standard for ourselves that we walk away frustrated," said BSU head coach Josh Rife. "It's not that any one player or position was bad today, but there were several moments we could have been better. Moving forward, I am a big believer in just doing what you do very well, and so with conference play we just need to make sure we are at our optimal efficiency game in and game out."
The first half was even with both teams only managing two shots through the first 45 minutes. The match appeared to be heading toward a 0-0 tie at halftime, but CMU broke through in the 44th minute when Marle Bringard hit the back of the net with a header over the outstretched arms of BSU keeper Tristin Stuteville. The goal would prove to be the game winner.
Ball State's offense produced 11 more chances in the second half, including four shots on goal, but ultimately could not find the goal for an equalizer as the Chippewas held on to secure the victory. Stuteville had one save for the Cardinals while Grace Alsop led the offensive charge with three shots. As a team, Ball State doubled up Central Michigan in corner kicks with a 6-3 advantage.
Ball State will have an opportunity to quickly regroup when Eastern Michigan visits Sunday. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET with live streaming available via ESPN+.
