Coach Rife begins his first season in Muncie fresh off an NCAA Tournament appearance with the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2018. Before that, he also guided the Liberty Flames to the tournament in 2016. Rife will look to make it three tournament appearances in three stops as he attempts to build on the recent success at Ball State and guide the Cardinals to their first ever appearance in the NCAA's.
Ball State owns four Mid-American Conference regular season championships (2006, 2007, 2015, 2016), the most of any school in the league. The Cardinals also claimed several MAC West Division titles before divisions were done away with at the beginning of the 2018 season.
In addition to team success, BSU boasts several individual awards in its history. Cardinals to win individual honors include Lorina White as back-to-back MAC Defensive player of the year (2015-16) and Abigail Boswell (2015) and Tatiana Mason (2018) who were both named MAC Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Ball State has placed 21 players on the All-MAC first team, 26 on the second team, 19 on the all-freshman squad and 14 on the all-tournament team.
Academically, Ball State has had 82 Academic All-MAC selections and 18 MAC Distinguished Scholar honorees. Alyssa Heintschel (2017) and Skylar Chew (2012) were both CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selections, while the Cardinals have also placed one on the second team and one on the third team. Heintschel was also the winner of a 2018 NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
In the past few years, multiple players including Chelsy Swackhamer, Lorina White, Brigit Reder, and Gabby Veldman have all played professionally across the globe. Most recently, 2018 senior Paula Guerrero signed to play professionally in Spain after a season that saw her make the All-MAC second team and United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region third team
Ball State's success continues to compound as the 2018 team set a program record with nine consecutive wins, which culminated with an appearance in the MAC Tournament Championship.
