Tounalom, Moritz tie for eighth to lead Cardinals in Maryland
BEALLSVILLE, Md. -- The Ball State women's golf team jockeyed back-and-forth with tournament host Georgetown at the top of the leaderboard Tuesday before settling for a runner-up finish at the Hoya Invitational.
Manon Tounalom and Hadley Moritz led the Cardinals in a tie for eighth place with 54-hole totals of 227 (+11) at Four Streams Golf Club. All six Cardinals competing this week, including individual Dylann Armstrong, finished among the top half of the field.
Ball State was 16 strokes behind Georgetown after Monday's opening 36 holes, but an overnight adjustment because of an incorrect scorecard left the Cardinals just seven back at the start of the final round.
The Cardinals rallied behind Tounalom, who closed with a round of 74, to catch the Hoyas by the middle of the final day. But the hosts closed better to defend their home turf with an eight-shot victory, finishing with a total of 906 (+42). BSU edged league foe Akron by one for second place in the final tuneup for the MAC Championships.
Moritz, who came in playing the best golf of her freshman season, posted her best finish of the year. Tounalom recorded her fifth top-15 finish of the season and her best result since she was runner-up in the season's opening tournament at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational.
Liz Kim tied for 11th for the second straight tournament, finishing at 230 (+14), while Armstrong was one shot behind her in a tie for 15th for the best finish of her rookie season. Morgan Lewis tied for 19th, and Emily Knouff climbed into a tie for 23rd with a final-round 75.
Ball State now turns its attention to the MAC Championships, which will be played close to home at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville. The action begins Friday, April 19.
