Cardinals’ 5-over par score in the final round matched their best of the year
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The Ball State women's golf team matched its best round of the year in relation to par Sunday on the last day of the season.
The Cardinals climbed into a tie for fourth place at the MAC Championships at Purgatory Golf Club for their best finish since 2013.
Yet what must excite head coach Katherine Mowat the most is that all of her golfers are back next year. The entire roster.
Chief among that group this week was freshman Hadley Moritz who tied for 11th place and led Ball State's final-round charge with a 1-under par 71. The Cardinals closed with a round of 293 (+5) to vault three spots in a crowded middle portion of the leaderboard.
It was a successful ending to a long, 36-hole day of golf that became necessary after Saturday's action was completely washed out by rain.
No. 10 Kent State overtook Toledo late in the first of Sunday's two rounds and pulled away in the afternoon for an 18-shot victory. With a 54-hole score of 857 (-7), the Golden Flashes claimed their 21st straight league title. Northern Illinois was a distant third.
Ball State and Eastern Michigan tied for fourth at 923 (+59) after carding the same first-round score while playing together and then spending seemingly the entire tournament side by side on the leaderboard.
Liz Kim (72), Morgan Lewis (74) and Manon Tounalom (76) provided the other counting scores for Ball State in the final round. Tounalom, who led the Cardinals in the second round with an even-par 72, was the second BSU player on the final leaderboard in a tie for 23rd.
Kent State's Karoline Stormo claimed medalist honors at 211 (-5), holding off Toledo's Saranlak Tumfong by two shots.
Moritz led Ball State at 224 (+8) after a final round that featured four birdies, including three in a row in the middle of Purgatory's back nine. Her performance capped a spring season that featured four top-25 finishes and two top-12's in four stroke play events.
Even next year, Tounalom will be the only senior on Ball State's roster. Kim and Emily Knouff will be juniors along with New Mexico State transfer Tiegan Taylor.
