Ranieri Riding Hot Streak as Men’s Golf Wraps up Mason Rudolph Championship
April 07, 2019 | Men's Golf
Wiseman gives Cardinals two players among top 30 on final leaderboard
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Freshman Joey Ranieri closed with consecutive rounds of 2-under par 69 to finish as the top Ball State golfer this weekend at the Mason Rudolph Championship.
Ranieri was 1 under par over three rounds on the South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club to tie for 21st in a field of 90 golfers. Timothy Wiseman, who opened with a career-best 67, finished one stroke behind him at even par in a tie for 27th.
Fourth-ranked Vanderbilt, which found itself 15 shots back after the opening round, came from behind to run away with the tournament and defend its title. The Commodores played Saturday and Sunday's final two rounds in a combined 29 under par to finish at that mark and win by 17 shots over second-place and 20th-ranked Liberty. No. 25 Tennessee was third.
Ball State finished 15th with a 54-hole total of 870 (+18). All 17 teams in the field were ranked among the top 150 in the Golfstat rankings, and 12 of the 100 highest-ranked golfers in the country competed.
Western Kentucky's Billy Tom Sargeant took medalist honors at 12 under par after carding three rounds in the 60's.
Ranieri and Wiseman carried the load for Ball State. Ranieri also played earlier in the week at the Butler Spring Invitational, where he tied for fourth. He played four of his five rounds under par for the two events, including three rounds of 69. Wiseman posted his sixth top-30 finish in seven stroke play starts this year and his fifth in a row.
Keegan Bronnenberg shook off a tough first round at Vanderbilt to post scores of 73 and 72 over the final two days. Jack Cunningham threw in a round of 73 and Yianni Kostouros a 74 during the tournament. But the Cardinals lacked the consistency they needed for a better finish against such a strong field.
The Mason Rudolph was the start of a busy stretch that will see Ball State play four straight weeks, concluding with the MAC Championships at the end of the month. The Cardinals will return to action Saturday and Sunday with the Boilermaker Invitational on the Kampen Course at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana.
