Men's golf team finishes 11th, defeats three other MAC teams competing
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The final round of the Boilermaker Invitational was canceled because of overnight rains and the threat for more throughout Sunday at the Kampen Course.
The Ball State men's golf team finished the abbreviated, 36-hole event 11th in a field of 15 teams all ranked among the top 140 in the country by Golfstat.
Ball State defeated the other three MAC teams competing – Kent State, Miami and Northern Illinois – plus in-state foe Indiana. Each of those league teams will be in the field again next week at Ohio State's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate and then in two weeks at the MAC Championships, where Kent State is the host and three-time defending champion.
Illinois State, the 85th-ranked team by Golfstat, won the Boilermaker Invitational at 16 under par, finishing one shot ahead of tournament host Purdue and two clear of fifth-ranked Oklahoma. Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn took medalist honors at 9 under par.
Joey Ranieri was Ball State's top finisher for the second straight week, tying for 22nd among the 84 golfers competing. The freshman's 1-under par total of 143 included a career-best 68 (-4) in the opening round. It was his third straight round in the 60's.
The Robert Kepler Invitational begins Friday, as the Cardinals head to the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University Golf Club to continue their stretch of four straight weeks of competition.
