March 09, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Matt Szews and David Siebum combined for 31 kills to lead the Ball State men's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over King Saturday evening in the final day of competition of the Outrigger Resorts Invitational.
With the win, Ball State evened its record at 10-10. King dropped to 10-8.
Szews led all players with 20 kills, which also equaled a season high for the junior lefty. In the three matches at the Outrigger Invite, Szews piled up 43 kills on a solid .375 attack percentage. Szews was named to the all-tournament team. Siebum reached double-figure kills for the first time in four matches. His .421 attack percentage was his second highest of the season when tallying at least 10 putaways.
The first set saw 16 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 22-all. Ball State then rattled off a Kaleb Jenness kill, Parker Swartz service ace and block from Lemuel Turner and Quinn Isaacson to wrap up the set, 25-22.
The Cardinals used a 7-1 run in the middle of the second set to open up a cushion before recording a 25-19 win.
King wouldn't go away easily in the third set. The Tornado fought off a match point while forcing ties at 22, 23 and 24. Ball State finally clinched the win on Szews' 20th kill and a King error.
Ball State will now return home from its Spring Break excursion and prepare to welcome Saint Francis and Penn State to Worthen Arena next weekend. First up is Saint Francis on Friday, March 15 at 7 p.m.
