Cardinals Return Home to Sweep Saint Francis
March 15, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – After playing a trio of tough matches in Hawaii last week, the Ball State University men's volleyball team returned home to Worthen Arena where it quickly swept Saint Francis behind 17 kills from Matt Szews and Ben Chinnici on Friday night.
The No. 15 Cardinals improved to 11-10 with the victory while Saint Francis fell to 11-9.
Ball State played well in all phases of the game, hitting .311 for the night while holding the Red Flash to just .011. The Cardinals assisted on 28 of 32 kills and put down two service aces. BSU also finished with seven total blocks and 34 digs.
"Hawaii is a difficult trip to return from, but we had a light week of practice and did some more mental work rather than physical so that helped us a lot," said head coach Joel Walton. "Between that and putting together a solid game plan that we executed, we got a good win tonight. I was really proud of the guys."
The Cardinals left little doubt from the beginning of the match that they were going to get the job done. Saint Francis held an early 9-7 lead in set one, but it was all BSU from there. Ball State recovered to take the lead and led by eight as it won the set by that margin, 25-17. SFU led 1-0 in game two but that was it as the Cardinals gradually build their lead until Szews hit the game-winning kill to put the set away, 25-18.
Looking for the sweep in set three, BSU never trailed and kept its foot on the gas to win the game, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
Aside from Szews and Chinnici, David Siebum had six kills and was followed by four from Lemuel Turner. Quinn Isaacson assisted on 25 of the team's 32 kills while Szews and Turner both notched service aces. Parker Swartz joined Szews with three blocks apiece to lead the Cardinals, and Siebum's nine digs were a team high.
Ball State will take the floor again tomorrow night when it celebrates its seniors prior to a battle with Penn State. Siebum, Swartz, Turner and Adam Wessel will all be recognized before first serve at 7 p.m. ET. The match can be viewd on ESPN3.
