Big Hits, Strong Pitching Leads Softball To Friday Sweep
March 08, 2019 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - Led by three home runs and more strong pitching, the Ball State softball team opened play in the JU/UNF Spring Break Classic with a pair of wins Friday evening at the UNF Softball Complex.
In Friday's opener, the Cardinals (16-9) used two home runs and three RBI from junior left fielder Haley Dominique to score a 4-2 victory over Cleveland State.
In addition, Miles shined in the win over the Vikings (5-12), limiting them to just four hits and an unearned run over 6.0 innings to earn her fifth victory of the season. She also stuck out a season-high nine batters, while issuing just a pair of walks.
In Friday's nightcap, sophomore Kendall Fields blasted her first career home run and the offense was aided by seven hit batters in an 8-2 win over tournament co-host North Florida.
In the circle, redshirt sophomore Darcie Huber picked up her first complete game victory of the season by limiting the Ospreys (9-8) to seven hits and a pair of runs over 7.0 innings of work. She also struck out four batters to improve to 3-1 on the year.
The Ball State softball team closes its 11-game, 10-day spring break trip Saturday with a pair of games at Jacksonville University's Pruitt Softball Complex. Up first, Georgetown at 11:30 a.m., followed by Presbyterian at 2 p.m.
GAME 1: Ball State 4 - Cleveland State 2
After Miles retired the Vikings (5-12) in order in the top half of the inning, Dominique gave the Cardinals another boost by opening the home half of the frame with her first home run of the season.
Ball State added to its lead in the bottom of the second starting with a one-out double to center field by freshman first baseman Mackenzie McCarty. After McCarty advanced to third on a two-out passed ball, three straight walks to senior catcher Olivia Huffman, sophomore shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk and Dominique brought her home.
The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth when the Vikings capitalized on an error to open the inning, a one-out single, a two-out hit batter and an RBI walk to cut the Ball State lead to 2-1.
The Cardinals were able to reclaim their two-run lead quickly, however, as Dominique blasted her second home run of the game with one out in the bottom of the inning.
Ball State added its final run in the top of the bottom of the sixth, starting with a single through the left side from Fields, who would be replaced by freshman pinch runner Faith Hensley. Hensley moved to second on a sac bunt from junior outfielder Kennedy Wynn, before scoring on McCarty's second double of the game which hit off the top of the fence in right-center field.
With the Cardinals leading 4-1, Rothwell entered the game to pitch in the top of the seventh. After giving up a home run to open her appearance, she responded with a strikeout and back-to-back popups to end the game and secure her seventh save of the season.
GAME 2: Ball State 8 - North Florida 2
It was another quick start for the Cardinals in the nightcap, as sophomore third baseman Stacy Payton was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on a double to the left field fence by junior first baseman Janae Hogg.
Ball State exploded for four more runs in the top of the third, starting with a leadoff walk to Payton. Two batters later, Fields followed with a single to center field giving BSU runners on the corner. Wynn then brought home the first run of the game with a perfectly executed squeeze play.
Freshman second baseman Amaia Daniel kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center to load the bases. Huffman then earned an RBI the hard way, being hit by a pitch. Walks to Demnianiuk and Dominique followed, extending Ball State's lead to 5-0.
Unfortunately, the Ospreys countered with a pair of runs in the third, cutting the lead to 5-2.
Ball State was able to get the runs back in the top of the fourth, however, as Fields launched her first career home run to left field. Senior designated player Annie Robinson was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and after freshman pinch runner Kim Manuel stole second, Fields gave the Cardinals a 7-2 lead.
The Cardinals scored the game's final run in the top of the fifth courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Payton which plated sophomore pinch runner Katie Janiga. Dominique was hit by a pitch with one out, while Janiga stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher.
UNF was able to get a pair of runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but Huber was able to leave them stranded both times to seal the win.
