Softball Extends Winning Streak To Six Games With Pair of Shutouts
March 09, 2019 | Softball
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - The Ball State softball team closed its 11-game spring break trip on a high note, picking up two more shutout wins Saturday afternoon at Jacksonville's Pruitt Softball Complex.
With the 10-0 (5 inning) win over Georgetown and the 3-0 victory over Presbyterian, the Cardinals (18-9) upped its current winning streak to a season-high six games and increased its shutout total to nine on the season, which ties as the 10th-best single season total in program history.
Ball State opened the day firing on all cylinders in the win over the Hoyas (5-16). Not only did the freshman pitcher Sarah Venker earn her third complete game shutout victory of the season, but the offense also tied its highest output of the season with its 10-run explosion.
Over her five innings of work, Venker limited Georgetown to just two hits while striking out five. Leading the way on offense was sophomore third baseman Stacy Payton who tallied an RBI double in the second and a two-run home run in the third to drive in three of BSU's 10 runs.
Sophomore shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk added her first career home run in the game, while sophomore designated player Kendall Fields drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBI double in the first for one of her two RBI in the game. Junior left fielder Haley Dominique added a pair of RBI, while sophomore right fielder Kennedy Wynn drove in one.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored three early runs and then cruised to a 3-0 victory the Blue Hose (5-15-2) behind another strong pitching performance, this time from freshman Tieghan Morio who allowed just three hits and struck out five over her 6.0 innings of work.
The nightcap also saw junior closer Alyssa Rothwell throw the final inning, striking out two, to earn her eighth save of the season and raise her career total to 22. The total is tops among active NCAA Division I players and is 10 shy of the NCAA career record of 32 held by Mississippi State's Kellie Wilkerson (1999-02).
Offensively, Dominique opened the game with her third home run of the season, while Payton and Fields added RBI hits in the third inning to give the game its final score.
Up next for the Ball State softball team, the Mercer Bears Classic which runs March 15-17. The Cardinals open the tournament Friday with games versus Connecticut (1:30 p.m.) and South Dakota (8:15 p.m.)
Mercer is led by former Cardinals assistant coach Stephaine DeFeo (2012-16), while former four-year letterwinner Nicole Steinbach (2013-16) is the pitching coach for South Dakota.
