Missed Opportunities Costly in Loss at Purdue Fort Wayne
March 26, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team had four set points in the opening game against Purdue Fort Wayne, but failed to capitalize and dropped the set along with the next two on the way to losing, 3-0, on Tuesday night.
Ball State dropped to 13-12 for the year and 4-6 in the MIVA while Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 14-9 and 6-4 in league play.
Kills were dead even between the two teams with 40 apiece, though the Mastodons outhit the Cardinals by a margin of .245 to .190. Ball State assisted on 37 of those kills and had a service ace along with seven blocks and 34 digs. BSU was plagued by errors all night as it committed 21 attack errors and 14 service errors.
Set one was Ball State's opportunity to seize momentum as it fought back from down five and escaped a set point to grab one of its own. The Cardinals had four opportunities to go up 1-0 in the match but could not secure any of them as the 'Dons clinched the early lead.
Games two and three belonged to Purdue Fort Wayne as Ball State gradually faded throughout each set. The Cardinals made a run toward the end of set two to try to force extra points, but had no luck fighting off enough set points.
Ben Chinnici led Ball State with 13 kills and was followed by Matt Szews' 12. Quinn Issacson led the team in assists with 35, while Lemuel Turner had one assist and four blocks to lead the Cardinals in both categories. Szews' eight digs were a team high.
BSU now travels to take on Lindenwood on Friday night. First serve will take place at 8 p.m. ET.
