Cardinals Beat Penn State, 3-1, on Senior Night
March 16, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University men's volleyball team honored its four seniors prior to Saturday's match, then defeated Penn State, 3-1, behind 21 kills from Matt Szews and a late flurry of points from freshman Kaleb Jenness at Worthen Arena.
No. 15 Ball State moved to 12-10 for the season while Penn State dropped to 8-12. Seniors Parker Swartz, David Siebum, Lemuel Turner and Adam Wessel were all recognized in a ceremony before the action started.
"I was really proud of the way our team fought in a tight match tonight," said head coach Joel Walton. "Penn State made things difficult for us tonight, but our guys were up for the challenge and got a hard-earned win. It's always nice when you can send your seniors out with a win. This group has done so much for our program and deserved everything that happened tonight."
The Cardinals recorded 55 kills to PSU's 42 on the night, and outhit the Nittany Lions by a margin of .298 to .230. BSU also recorded 52 assists, six service aces, 47 digs and 10 total blocks.
Set one was back and forth all the way as the team's traded points until Penn State took an 18-16 lead for the largest lead of the game at that time. Ball State rallied to go up 20-19, but it was short lived as the Nittany Lions recovered their lead to take a 1-0 advantage on a 25-23 set victory.
Looking to even up the match, Ball State jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in set two behind solid serving from Swartz. Penn State rallied to tie the game at four apiece, but the Cardinals ran away the remainder of the set as they used a late 4-0 run and led by as many as eight before winning the set 25-18.
Game three was similar to game one in that the two sides traded leads the entire way. With Penn State holding a 21-20 advantage, the Cardinals ripped off a 5-0 run to win the set on a kill by Ben Chinnici.
Ball State appeared to be in trouble late in set four as the Nittany Lions held a 20-17 lead while the Cardinals attempted to close out the match. Coach Walton called timeout and subbed Jenness into the game, which proved to be the difference. Jenness recorded a kill on his first play of the night, then led a 4-0 run from the service line where he tallied two aces. A few points later, Siebum put away the game-winning kill as BSU won, 25-23.
While Szews' 21 kills led the way, Chinnici and Siebum recorded 10 apiece. Quinn Isaacson paced the Cardinals with 46 assists, and Siebum and Jenness had two assists each. Isaacson had a team-high five blocks, and Wessel led the way in digs with 10.
Ball State now resumes MIVA play as it prepares to welcome Loyola on Thursday. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
