Ball State-Notre Dame set for Saturday morning at 11
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Redshirt freshmen Noah Navarro and Chayce McDermott watched much of last season saddled with injuries. On Friday, the two Indiana natives drove the Ball State baseball team to a 3-1 win at Shipyard Park in Charleston.
Navarro, who currently leads the team in hits, average, OBP, runs and RBIs, smacked a homer to left-center and singled and scored in the 4th as Ball State took a 3-0 lead it wouldn't relinquish. On the day, Navarro went 2-for-4 with two runs and BSU's first home run of the year.
"Noah continues to swing it well and we made some defensive plays that really helped us," Maloney said, citing two picks and a diving play by John Ricotta as well as a diving catch by Mack Murphy in left field.
McDermott picked up his first collegiate win by tossing 6.0 scoreless innings and striking out seven Charleston Southern batters. In bend-but-don't-break fashion, McDermott made big pitches with runners on. He induced a 6-3 double play in the 6th to hold off the host school (but visiting team). Brendan Burns and Kyle Nicolas slammed the door shut, with Nicolas picking up his second save. Nicolas also saved Ball State's win at Alabama.
"We got an excellent outing from Chayce and Kyle was absolutely electric," Maloney said.
It was the first time this season Ball State didn't allow an extra-base hit, limiting Charleston Southern to just seven singles.
Chase Sebby walked and scored on an RBI groundout by Ross Messina in the bottom of the 4th. Sebby also threw behind a runner on first base to make a great defensive play in the top of the 1st.
CSU's Reid Hardwick went 3-for-4 and leadoff man Josh Litchfield had three hits and scored a run.
The second game of the trip is set for Saturday morning, when Drey Jameson will take the ball against Notre Dame. First pitch is 11 a.m. Fans can LISTEN LIVE to the game or follow live scoring or on Twitter.
