Strong First Half Not Enough In WBB’s Loss At MAC West Division Leader CMU
February 06, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Cardinals led 34-33 over the Chippewas at intermission but it wasn't enough to sustain in the second half against the MAC West Division leader.
Ball State (7-14, 2-7 MAC) couldn't contain Central Michigan's (16-5, 7-2 MAC) All-MAC duo in Presley Hudson and Reyna Frost in the second half, falling 81-63.
Central Michigan came out strong in the opening minutes of the contest, as was expected from the division leader, but Ball State decided to throw some punches of its own at the 4:17 mark. The Cardinals had enough of being the underdog and started to come back in a big way, outscoring the Chippewas 16-5 the remainder of the first quarter. Freshman guard Gabby Smith capped Ball State's scoring spree with a layup to give the Cardinals a 21-20 lead over the Chippewas heading into the second quarter.
After that, Ball State and Central Michigan played toe-to-toe with each other for the next 10 minutes of action. The Cardinals led by as many as three on two occasions, the last one being at the 1:03 mark after a layup from sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown. CMU's Hudson made the last basket heading into the half , but Ball State held onto a slim 34-33 lead at the break.
The Chippewas' offense started to click in the third quarter, outscoring Ball State 24-15 after shooting a staggering 63 percent (10-of-16) from the field. Frost and Hudson couldn't be contained as the two combined for 15 points in the third period. Ball State's junior forward Aliyah Walker came off the bench for a five-point spark but it was too late as the momentum had already swung back to the home team. CMU went into the final frame up 57-49.
While Ball State tried to claw its way back down the stretch, Central Michigan maintained key possessions and was able to put the game away in the fourth quarter.
Brown led the Cardinals with her 15th career double-double after an 18-point, 12 rebound performance. Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass finished the night with 11 points.
The Ball State women's basketball team is set to host Northern Illinois Saturday for its "Think Pink" breast cancer awareness game at 4:30 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
