February 16, 2019 | Women's Basketball
YPSILANTI, Mich. – Today's game between the Cardinals and the Eagles came down to the wire as both teams were fighting to snap five-game losing streaks.
Eastern Michigan (11-12, 4-8 MAC) used its home court advantage to come out on top, defeating the Cardinals (7-17, 2-10 MAC), 56-53 at the Convocation Center.
Oshlynn Brown hit a layup with 1:58 remaining in the contest to give the Cardinals a 53-52 lead over the Eagles. After a minute stretch of both teams going scoreless, EMU's Danielle Minott hit her first field goal of the game and drained a 3-pointer to put the Eagles back up by two. After that, neither team could score another field goal. EMU added a free throw in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass scored first for Ball State, knocking down a three to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game and went on to finish the game with a career-best 20 points. Ball State continued to lead 8-6 over the Eagles at the media timeout. EMU then went on a 12-7 run to end the first frame with an 18-15 advantage over the Cardinals.
Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, scoring a combined 12 points between the two programs, with the majority of the points coming from the charity stripe. The game was knotted at 22, but a late foul call in the closing seconds against Ball State sent Eastern Michigan to the line, giving the Eagles a slim 23-22 lead over the Cardinals at the break.
For the game, Ball State did out-rebound EMU, 37-34 with freshman forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir leading all players with a personal high 12 rebounds. Eastern Michigan's bench scored 12 points while the Cardinals bench only chipped in two.
