Hogg’s Long Balls Help Lead Softball to Pair of Saturday Wins
February 16, 2019 | Softball
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- - Powered by a pair of home runs from junior slugger Janae Hogg, as well as another strong day of pitching, the Ball State softball team picked up a pair of Saturday wins at the Madeira Beach Invitational.
The Cardinals (6-3) opened the day with a hard-fought 5-4 win over Central Arkansas, before topping Delaware in five innings by a score of 9-0.
Hogg provided a pair of offensive highlights for the Cardinals, blasting a three-run shot in the top of the first inning in the win over the Bears (4-4), while adding a two-run blast to open the scoring in the victory over the Blue Hens (4-3).
Hogg has blasted home runs in three straight games, has four on the year and raised her career total to 23. The 23 home runs are the sixth-most in program history and are four shy of moving her into the top five on Ball State's career chart.
From the circle, senior starter Aeshia Miles and junior closer Alyssa Rothwell combined their efforts in the opening win, while freshman Sarah Venker dominated in the nightcap for her first career complete game shutout.
Miles threw the first five innings versus Central Arkansas to earn her second win of the season, limiting the hot-hitting Bears to just eight hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out five. UCA entered the day batting .333 as a team and averaging nearly six runs a game.
Rothwell entered in the sixth and threw the final two innings to earn her fourth save of the season. She struck out three batters, including the final two of the game, while raising her career saves total to 18.
In the nightcap, Venker limited the Delaware offense to just two hits over five innings to improve to 3-0 on the year. She also struck out five batters while not issuing a single walk. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Ball State's pitching staff and the third involving Venker.
The Ball State softball team closes play in the Madeira Beach Invitational Sunday with games versus Quinnipiac (9 a.m.) and Murray State (11:30 a.m.).
