Rothwell Locks Up MAC Saves Record in Win over Monmouth
February 15, 2019 | Softball
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.- - Then there was one.Â
Â
Junior closer Alyssa Rothwell became the Mid-American Conference's all-time saves leader after striking out the side in the seventh inning to help lift the Ball State softball team to a 3-0 victory over Monmouth Friday afternoon at the Madeira Beach Invitational.
Â
Thanks to another gem from its pitching staff, the Cardinals (4-3) earned their third shutout victory of the season by limiting the Hawks (0-1) to just one hit and one walk.
Â
Senior pitcher Aeshia Miles dominated over the first six innings, surrendering just the lone hit and walk, while striking out five batters to pick up her first win of the season.
Â
With Ball State leading 3-0, Rothwell entered the game in the seventh and fanned all three batters she faced for her third save of the season. It raised her career total to 17, giving her sole possession of the MAC career record. Next up, the NCAA record of 32 held by Mississippi State's Kellie Wilkerson (1999-02).
Â
After being held hitless in its 5-0 tournament-opening loss to Belmont earlier in the day, Ball State's offense received an immediate lift in the bottom of the first courtesy of junior first baseman Janae Hogg who launched her second homerun of the season deep over the temporary fencing in left field.
Â
Following a scoreless second inning, the Cardinals struck for two more runs in the bottom of the third in a rally started by freshman right fielder Jessi Kiefor's first career hit, a double to fence in right-center field.
Â
Junior left fielder Haley Dominique followed with a single to right-center, giving BSU runners on the corners with no outs. Then, Dominique was able to draw a throw to second on a double steal which allowed the speedy Kiefor to swipe home for the second run of the game.
Â
After a walk to Hogg two batters later, sophomore third baseman Stacy Payton found right-center once again with an RBI double pushing the score to 3-0.
Â
The Ball State softball team continues play in the Madeira Beach Invitational Saturday with games versus Central Arkansas (11:30 a.m.) and Delaware (2 p.m.).
