Samz Drains Last Second 3-Pointer For WBB's Win Over Providence
December 19, 2019 | Women's Basketball
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In true senior fashion, Jasmin Samz knocked down a 3-pointer to give Ball State a 52-51 lead over Providence with nine seconds remaining. Samz basket ended up being the game-winner for the Cardinals Thursday night in "The Pit".
Ball State (6-4) remains undefeated (2-0) with its 52-51 victory over Providence (8-3) at the 2019 Lobo Invitational hosted by New Mexico.
It was a low scoring contest for both teams that typically both average over 65 points per game. Ball State cut the game close yet again but came out on top after outscoring the Friars 18-10 in the final stanza.
Junior Oshlynn Brown led the Cardinals with 14 points and 14 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career. Samz also reached double digits with 13 points while also adding five assists.
As the game came down to the wire for the Cardinals in their second-straight contest, freshman Sydney Freeman revived BSU again after she knocked down a crucial 3-pointer with 4:28 left on the clock, giving Ball State the 45-44 lead for the first time since the start of the contest. Providence then drew some fouls that would put the Friars back up by four (51-47) with under two minutes left in the game.
Ball State's defense then held Providence off the remainder of the way to give them the possession with 22 seconds left. After Samz got open on the right, she drained her third 3-pointer of the game that eventually resulted in BSU's win.
The Cardinals were not going to start today's game the way they did yesterday's contest against Loyola Marymount. Instead, it was Ball State that came out strong offensively in the opening minutes of action, jumping out to a quick 6-0 run after back-to-back layups from Brown and a quick jumper from Samz. Ball State continued to control the tempo in the first quarter up until the final minutes. The Friars closed the quarter with a quick 4-0 run to make it a 10-6 ball game heading into the second frame.
The tables turned in the second 10 minutes of play, although the game was tied twice, the Friars used their inside game to move ahead of the Cardinals, 20-14, with just under two minutes left in the half. Freshman Anna Gamarra knocked down one from behind the arc to snap BSU's scoring drought, but the Friars took a four-point (21-17) advantage over Ball State at intermission.
The Friars struck first in the second half, with a layup from Olivia Orlando and a 3-pointer from Kaela Webb to put Providence up 26-19. About a minute later sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir answered with her first 3-point basket of the ball game to cut the Friars lead back to four (26-22). After that, both teams played an up and down ball game, Brown put the Cardinals within two (28-26) with 5:34 left in the third. But the Friars would outpace Ball State, outscoring the Cardinals 20-17 to close out the third with a 41-34 lead.
The Cardinals wrap up action at the Lobo Invitational Friday at 9 p.m. ET when they take on host New Mexico at Dreamstyle Arena. After that, Ball State will return home for its final non-conference game of the season on Dec. 30 against Urbana at 7 p.m. ET in Worthen Arena.
