WBB Goes 3-0 At Lobo Invite; Defeats Host New Mexico 70-57
December 20, 2019 | Women's Basketball
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Cardinals (7-4) will have a lot to celebrate this holiday season, after wrapping up play at the Lobo Invitational as the only undefeated team after taking down host New Mexico (9-6) by a score of 70-57 Friday night in Dreamstyle Arena (The Pit).
Throughout the entire invitational, the Cardinals were resilient after posting back-to-back comeback wins over their first two opponents, Loyola Marymount (77-72) and Providence (52-51). Although tonight's contest wasn't easy, Ball State took control of the game early on and remained in the driver seat the entire 40 minutes of play.
Ball State was led by sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir who finished with 16 points. Senior Jasmin Samz was also in double figures for the Cardinals with 11 along with teammate Arbrie Benson who had a season high 10 points.
By the first media timeout of the game, the Cardinals had jumped out to a 10-4 lead over the Lobos with baskets from Agustsdottir, Samz and freshman Sydney Freeman. New Mexico struggled on both ends of the court and couldn't stop Ball State's quick offensive spurts. The Cardinals went on to take a 16-10 lead into the second stanza.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the next 10 minutes of action. Freshman Anna Gammara scored the first field goal of the second frame after knocking down a 3-pointer at the 6:41 mark to give Ball State its largest lead of the Lobo Invitational. Her shooting was contagious as classmate Freeman followed in her footsteps, knocking down the same shot on Ball State's ensuing possession to make it 24-12 with 4:33 left in the first half. The Cardinals defense held the Lobos without a field goal for six minutes in the second quarter. Ball State knocked down six 3-pointers prior to intermission and took a 35-24 advantage over New Mexico at the half.
New Mexico opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to come within five (35-30) of Ball State. The Cardinals quickly answered back with a 13-4 scoring spree of their own after back-to-back baskets from Agustsdottir and Samz. At the media timeout, the Cardinals had went back up by 14 (48-34). Ball State kept on fighting throughout the third despite the Lobos efforts and would head into the final frame of action with a convincing 18-point cushion (58-40).
But the game wasn't over yet, the Lobos opened the final period with another run, 10-3, this time to come within 11 (61-50). Benson came to the rescue and snapped the Lobos momentum with her third 3-point basket of the contest. After that, the Lobos were unable to get any closer to Ball State.
The Cardinals held the Lobos to a 25.0 shooting percentage for the game and Ball State also out-rebounded New Mexico, 57-42.
The Ball State women's basketball team will close out non-conference action on Dec. 30 against Urbana in Worthen Arena at 7 p.m. After that, the Cardinals will open Mid-American Conference play at home against Kent State on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
