Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller at Buffalo on Elvbo's Late Goal
October 06, 2019 | Soccer
BUFFALO, N.Y. – Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Ball State University soccer team found itself desperately searching for a goal with the score tied 2-2 and just under two minutes to play in double overtime. The Cardinals completed that search in the 109th minute when Sam Kambol crossed the ball into the box where Julia Elvbo was waiting to volley the pass into the net and give Ball State the thrilling 3-2 victory at Buffalo Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals improved to 9-3-0 for the year with the win and 3-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play. It also marked BSU's third straight victory. Buffalo dropped to 4-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league competition with the setback.
"Once again, we found ourselves in a close game on the road," said head coach Josh Rife. "We started the game well and were on the front foot. I thought that Buffalo made some changes at halftime and we took a little long to adjust, but the ladies sorted it out and were able to settle into the half. The final goal was a fantastic team goal with good movement, good execution of passes and a great finish from Julia."
Ball State appeared to be cruising toward and easy victory when it jumped out to an early, 2-0 halftime lead. In the 18th minute Kambol took control of the ball just outsite the top of the penalty area and beat the keeper to the top right corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage. Later in the first half, Nicky Potts and Sam Musick combined to get the ball into the box where it got loose right in front of the goal. Lizzie Philibin beat the scrambling goalkeeper to the loose ball and tapped it in to give the Cardinals the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Buffalo quickly got to work after the break when Leah Wengender scored off a corner kick in the 47th minute to cut BSU's lead in half. The Bulls continued to press and broke through again in the 68th minute on a goal scored by Kaitlyn Walsh. Both sides had chances the remainder of regulation to score the game winner, but could not manufacture a goal.
The match was trending toward a 2-2 draw with no score through the first overtime period, and eight minutes of the second. Then, in the 109th minute, Ball State sent a long ball down the right sideline where Kambol was waiting. With a defender right on her heels, she crossed the ball into the box and connected with Elvbo. In mid-air, Elvbo struck the ball and put it in the back of the net to secure the last-second win.
As a team, Ball State attempted 12 shots for the match with nine on goal. The offense also produced one corner kick. Tristin Stuteville finished the match with seven saves.
"Coming home 2-0 on this road trip is great and we're looking forward to being back home next game against NIU," Rife added.
The Cardinals are back in action Thursday when they return home to take on Northern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
